First They Came

First They Came – by Martin Niemöller

Martin Niemöller (1892-1984) was a German Lutheran pastor and theologian. Initially a supporter of Adolf Hitler, Niemöller became a critic of the Nazi regime when he realized its atrocities. He was arrested and imprisoned in the concentration camps of Sachsenhausen and Dachau from 1937 to 1945. After the war, Niemöller became an activist for peace and human rights.

This is happening again

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Jew

Then they came for me

And there was no one left

To speak out for me
